COMMENT(S): All in the numbers? An analysis of Scottish Championships judges' results

Hi CA, thanks for your input. I hold my hands up and say that everything you have mentioned is correct. It was indeed a very simplistic light hearted look at things using simple averages without too many correlating factors (i.e. just the judge). It was done merely for fun. There are many more issues you could have pointed out also. Perhaps the Fun section on the website would have been more appropriate? Take it easy Ryan

I thought this article was brilliant, in a fun kind of way... On just a shade more serious side, I think there might (remember now, I DID use the word "might") be reason to believe trends and biases exist. I happen to believe not all biases or trends are "bad." I do think they exist everywhere. Having given that "preamble" I do think serious consideration should be given to adding more judges to the major contest circles for the higher grades. Maybe even throw out the high/low scores? This "experiment" would take the pressure off any single judge and might make a good "dark horse" band feel it does have a shot at getting into the prize list.

Good fun with figures is all this is. There is isn´t really enough material on the individual judges to do this, yet.

What is weird about the final predictions is that although it shows John Wilson as having FMM first more often that any other band (since 2001), it also shows that the last time he actually did have them first was six years ago in 2002. If that trend continues then I'd say it's pretty unlikely that he'd have them first this weekend. Unfortunately it's this kind of trend that is missed out in the stats simply because the records don't go back far enough. For what it's worth, my money is on SLOT to capture their first major title this weekend. I think it'll pretty much come down to Ronaldson's results that call it.

When teaching solo drumming, patience is a necessity. Enforce the basics. Don't rush the student into playing rudiments/tunes too difficult for them.
