A tragedy of incredible proportions. Jim, you did a great job of reminding us of the magnitude of this battle and of WWI. For me, I was reminded that the tune is a a true memorial to that tragedy, something to think of when we play it. The fascinating story of Willie Lawrie was both inspiring and tragic and to top it off with a few tips and the sound file brought the whole story full circle. Well done!

As far as the 9/8 composition goes - maybe it's worth noting that Robert Reid's collection shoehorns the tune into a rather uncomfortable 3/4. Perhaps the melody came first and the correct notation some years later?
