COMMENT(S): Robert Mathieson: the pipes|drums Interview, Part 4

After the Pre-Worlds Concert in 2003, Rab and I had quite a chat. He was then asking me why I had 3rds and 5ths based off of Low A playing through the passages that were based on Low G? He took it from there and the Shotts mid-section now is doing harmonic and melodic support that few understand just yet. What they have done in the last 5 years has set the groundwork for it to go WAY outside, back again and then be able to move on. He was the first one to think about those possibilities and explore them. Hats off to Rab and Jim for continually "bringing it"! Turnaround and all! Hoss

Some of the most exciting ideas about pipe band I've seen since I got involved thirteen years ago. Coming out of a musical tradition playing guitar in rock bands, I have always wondered why pipe bands seemd to be playing within a very narrow set of constraints instead of looking for ways to keep evolving musically. Kudos to PM Mathieson, and I look forward to seeing where he takes it from here.

Great past, great present, great futurefeatured article

Don't be afraid to modify or undercut holes to improve chanter intonation. It may seem extreme, but there would scarcely be a Grade 1 band that hasn't partaken in a spot of chanter renovation to beneficial effect.
