COMMENT(S): The World's Format: what YOU think

I think the results speak for themselves - people pretty much like the format as is.... Piping Live is indeed a tremendous event in itself now and must be a huge bonus point for keeping the Worlds where it (IMO) belongs as the whole week is now one big festival. It has to be sampled to truly appreciate it too. I still believe ALL bands should be able to enter and ALL bands get an equal and fair shot at the title....to put in all the hard work and effort to fundraise for trips is truly commendable and should be rewarded, at the very least, with a fair crack of the whip. I can see a two day competition being a viable option.....not just for grade 1 but for the lower grade too where there are stacks of bands entered every year. If the Worlds were to move then I believe that every three or four years would be about right. This would allow the host city plenty of time for fact finding trips, pre-planning, infrastructure buliding, organistaion and promotion etc. There's probably only a handful of countries that could pull it off with reasonable success and yes I suppose they deserve a crack of the whip too. Just a few thoughts of mine..ready to be shot down!! Regards Daz

Pipe bands sound the best when they are in a circle on a grassy field.

I was surprised that so many voted for keeping the event in Glasgow, but as stated, maybe the Piping Live festival has something to do with that as people can literally feast on piping and drumming the week before the Worlds. I was also surprised about the choice of 'outdoor park' given the Scottish weather!-the worst of which we are enjoying at this very moment.

The survey resuts indeed do point to leaving the Medley length as is. My comment was aimed at highlighting the logistical issues that would occur IF a 15 minute Medley was to be adopted. However, at this point, we needn't concern ourselves too much with that.

I'm not really seeing how the survey suggests that longer medleys should be considered. The results were: 55% want to "Keep it exactly as it is." That is, more than half like the current Grade 1 playing requirements. 22% chose "A 5-7 minute Medley Qualifying round and an MSR and 5-7 minute Medley for the Final," and 17% chose "An MSR and 5-7 minute Medley for a Qualifier, and a 10-15 minute Medley for the Final." I'm not sure how this shows people want a longer medley?

Before any changes to the lengths of Medleys can even be considered, the time alotment for the event needs to be examined. To move forward in that direction would probably require that the event be held over two days. If, for example, the final Medley was to be 15 minutes in duration, that would mean allowing 20 minutes per band minimum x 12 bands minimum in the final for a grand total of a 4 hour long event (or more..say 15 bands?). Allowing for a qualifier in the morning as well as the MSR final, well, you see where I'm going. Under the current format, the "Uber" Medley wouldn't be practical unless it was held over the length of an entire day. Thus a 2 day event would be required.

It would be interesting to find out what number of participnats and their instrument and grade actually contributed to the survey. Is this the opinion of thousands or just the opinion of a few???

When teaching solo drumming, patience is a necessity. Enforce the basics. Don't rush the student into playing rudiments/tunes too difficult for them.
