Loved the article! A great read and a rare insight into what the experts in our field do to get the top sound. Thanks again

Spot on, Lawrie. We owe Geoff a debt of gratitude for the bagpipe sound/maintenance revolution. While it is true that some can get a great sound the old fashioned way, it really is a royal pain to achieve and maintain. The new fangled methods have opened up the possibility for most of us to improve our sound (dare I say) dramatically........

Spoilt for choice indeed! Kudos to the trail blazers like Geoff Ross (first ever "synthetic" drone reeds and also the moisture control system way back in the mid 80's). Once scoffed at as a 'colonial gimmick' in an era when very few pipers or bands could hold a sound for the length of a performance. Now, very much the norm and the fore-runner to the raft of products we see now. This is why so many bands and pipers are enjoying more reliability and stability. A great article. It is amusing how anonymity is requested prior to 'fessing up'. A funny bunch, aren't we!

I wonder what setup Stuart Liddell was playing when he won the recent Glenfiddich?

A great article. Just shows that the top boys aren't influenced by anything apart from their own preferences...good stuff.

It has been discussed but never revealed. Thanks for uncovering the tremendous sounding pipes and pipers that we all have been listening to for many a year. The price of vintage pipes just went up.

My set up is Robertson drones (circa 1949), old Ross black bass drone reed with a cane tongue and eezedrone tenors. I find that the lack of harmonics coming from the synthetic tenors is compensated by the overabundance coming from the bass reed (overall blend). This gives the pipe a full rich sound with a little emphasis on a muted deep bass tone. My chanter choice is a Ross reed in a 1989 wooden WarMac carefully modified by myself for a better relative tonal balance balance. And of course, the Ross bag and canister system complete with a tube trap. The only negative comment that I've had from one judge was that my tenors were too quiet! And to make sure that the judge is aware that I actually have two tenors going, I tune one for show if necessary....
