A great article - well done. Recalling the Shotts version let's not forget the superb setting from Alex Duthart - ah what great style the man had.

Great article, the 6-8 Duncan Mclean is a great tune I was given a hand written version by my Pipe Major in the sixties he was a friend of the MacAllisters, I never knew the history of the tune, I still have the original music and still play it.

In the original version played by Tom Muirhead the eighth notes eg first half of bar three, are all even, whereas in the pipetunes version the first group of two is cut/dot - similarly at other places eg first group in bar 7 - they're even in Tom M's version, dot/cut in pipe version. Another difference is at the start of part 2, where Tom M plays a sixteenth F before a dotted eighth high A, whereas the Deger version goes straight to the high A. Are these the kind of differences you're noting, or some other difference in the version you're used to? I really like the sharpness of the cut F up to the dotted High A at the start of 2nd part, but would High A have been put there alone, to ensure a greater togetherness in a pipe band at the start of a part perhaps? Whatever, I think this is a crackin tune.

This version of the tune is slightly different that what I'm used to hearing/playing. Is this a revised copy of the original version?

Another great tune by a non piper. You should have a whole article about popular tunes written by someone other than pipers. Oh and Jim's "Deger" Pipe seems to be out of breath.

Pipers: When making a taorluath or crunluath from D, slightly flex the right-hand's fingers out a bit just before the movement. This will help to lift the ring-finger for that B gracenote.
