This feeling of being cut out from the 'outside piping world' described here just rang a very old bell... Thanx for the article; on hold for part 2.

Oh, and last but not least, A big thanks to people like Mark for sharing their music. He has amazing tunes and he willingly puts them out there, harmony and all for us to have. What's great about Mark, is that he knows his music inside and out. Many people refer to composers such as him as freaks or gaining their musical approach from other sources, but in reality, when you know music like Mark, Adam Quinn, matt Welch and some of these others, it's absolutely amazing what can come out of our instrument. Thank you Mark, and all the others who strive to push our music to it's full potential.

Fantastic. Mark talks so much sense, knows what he's talking about, and has an eye on the future as well as the past and the present. Improvisation skills-- so lacking in the piping world. I'd bet my bottom dollar, improvisation, and linking the music up with the personal, will be the greatest tools of development in the pipe band world in the next fifty years!! Already looking forward to part 2.

When competing, play to your strengths, not your weaknesses. It's useless to play 'Susan MacLeod' if you are not able to make strong clear darados. Steer clear of the 'Atholl Cummers' if you can't make F doublings. Concentrate on tunes that allow you to show off the best of your finger technique.
