| I really admire Mark's (and Hawthorn's) attitude towards winning. He is absolutely right. Winning is a nice thing to take home from a competition but all too often becomes an obsession. People were playing pipes and drums for the enjoyment of it long before anyone started offering up money and trophies. Compeition and prizes are a valuable incentive, but anyone for whom that is the only incentive really has lost their way.
To me, a compliment from a friend, competitor, or respected player is the best prize available. |

| There were a few G1 bands missed in the article that in the past 10 years have represented Australia well. WAPOL / St Mary's - Band Club / AusHigh.
The standard of these bands i think has done Australia proud. Just unfortunate that similar circumstances have lead to each bands demise.
Im sure in the not to distant future another G1 band will rise to the challenge. |

| quite clearly mark has a completely different attitude to pipe-banding than most and hes 100% correct in everything he says is missing today. great stuff, if only i was on the other side of the world. |

| Luv the emphasis on loyalty and commitment to the band, very important for a good team, I played for Morrabbin in the 80's against Hawthorn, they were pretty well unbeatable at the time, but good to compete against, good to see they're still there, but again great to emphasis the ethics of a band, something a player needs to recognise builds character in players...... | |
