Gotta go with piperjde. While I like to nudge the musical boundaries, I still think that in a cow pasture, the circle is the way to go. If all of the chanters face the audience, then the drones are pointing up and away. In a wide open field, surely that would alter the chanter drone balance projecting toward (or away from?) the audience. It's a different situation in a concert hall or an outdoor bandshell where the sound can reverberate more or bounce off the back wall and project forward. That simply will not happen an open air venue with no back wall or ceiling. Another consideration is that when drummers are facing forward, the sound off the bottom of the drums could be lost. All one would hear is the top head sound. Also, in an enclosed outdoor arena setup where there is seating forming a U shape, the circle is better format. If anything, we should look at making that type of seating arrangement a standard. Not so easy with the games budgets, but also not impossible. Perhaps roped off sections on an open field are the best compromise where the audience has access to 3 side of the U shape and the band plays in a circle neither facing toward or away from anyone in the bigger scheme of things...

So....I always thought we stood in a circle because it enabled us to all watch one person to help us with our unison. Also, standing in a circle there is always a side facing the audience. 360 degrees. If they turn out it's just the opposite people facing the other side of the audience. I would give the circle thing a rest until they set up the venue to have the bands only face one direction instead of all 4 directions as they currently due.

Im with you MArk !!!! FRom another rebellous Aussie, left piping for 15 years, came back thru folk music, now pipe major of a small Grde 4 band trying to push the boundaries..........
