COMMENT(S): Gavin Walker resigns as Shotts pipe-major

| At the end of the day, regardless of whether an organisation is a 'tinpot' organisation or a world wide sporting organisation there are rules and articles of association that are to be adhered to.
It's nothing to do with free speech or being in a democracy. If in your workplace they had rules about what you were allowed to say and do, you would be expected to adhere to them or expect the relevant sanctions if you didn't. Lets make that clear, it has nothing to do with democracy or freedom of speech or civil rights being infringed.
Many well known sporting starts have received hefty fines for remarks made on social networking sites.
For me personally why people have to shout their mouths off on these sites about what they are having for their tea and how tired they are or to criticise others is beyond me. It seems there is no dignity in the world these days. There are rules in place and to be honest, people should know better.
The only people who now appear to be paying the penalty for this is the band - who dare I say it may struggle to continue - certainly in the short term.
Regardless of whether you like Shotts or not, it's a shabby affair which could and should have been avoided. Judges will always get criticised, you win some, you lose some, that's life get over it.
It's a shame Gavin has been forced into this, I daresay it's been a difficult couple of years but I'm sure he would have gotten there - after all previous leaders of other Grade 1 bands took a number of years before cracking it in Grade 1.
Best wishes to all concerned.

| Sorry the way things have worked out for you Gavin. I appreciate your head is probably all over the place but wish you all the best with whatever you decide to do next. Gordon Stafford |

| If the Facebook page was an official band one, I can see the point maybe, but if this was his personal Facebook page, he's surely entitled to write anything he wants there. Is the RSPBA really sitting reading peoples' Facebook pages? Shouldn't they use the time to brush up on the principles of freedom of speech, neutrality in judging, or even do some continuing professional development in music? |

| Why should the R.S.P.B.A. care what people say on Facebook? It is called freedom of speech. You may not like it but you have every right to say it. Poor judgement yes but grounds for suspension? I think not. | |
