I enjoyed reading this piece and learning a bit more about Bob and his drumming. Unfortunately I do not own any recordings of the band and found only one recording of them on the internet. Well, I sure liked what I heard. It was a treat to listen to a style of drumming that you just don't hear anymore.

To put a common misconception right: British Caledonian Airways already had an established pipe band, performing at all the many promotional tours overseasas, based at Gatwick Airport, London, from 1969. Renfrew pipe band were sponsored by B.Cal in 1973 (named as British Caledonian, Renfrew) under PW Willie Connel, who moved to Canada later that same year, and DS Joe Noble and his World Champion drum corps, The Gatwick based band started competing under PM Bob Richardshon and DS David Bruce in 1976 with members including: PM Angus, Allan, Anthony and Kenny Macdonald; Hugh MacInnes and Gavin Staddart. Gatwick were promoted to Grade One the following year after becoming Champions of Champions in Grade Two in 1977. Bob Turner joined the Gatwick based band as DS in 1978 having played as a guest previously on band tours, as did other members from Muirheads and the Refrew pipe band on occasions when needed. The Renfrew based band lost their B.Cal sponsorship in 1978, but continued under various other sponsor names. Several members left Renfrew and joined the London based band. When British Caledonian Airways were taken over by British Airways in 1988 the band was made reduntant and the members based in Scotland received sponsorship from Scottish Power. The Gatwick based band members continued unsponsored as Gatwick Caledonian.

Thanks for the interview. Great to hear from him. Always looked up to Bob for his sound and accompaniment. That band made great music.

When teaching solo drumming, patience is a necessity. Enforce the basics. Don't rush the student into playing rudiments/tunes too difficult for them.
