Willie McCallum wins Metro Cup

Newark, New Jersey – February 16, 2008 - The annual Metro Cup Solo Piping Competition was won by Willie McCallum (pictured right) of Bearsden, Scotland, whose first in the Medley and second in the Piobaireachd were enough to take the aggregate prize. Andrew MacPhail of Ontario won both amateur events to take the P-M George Bell Trophy.

The event is organized by the Metro New York Branch of the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association, and some professional competitors' travel is sponsored by pipe bands that also use them in private workshops.

Quality reed selection is a pre-requisite to obtaining a good tone in a pipe corps. Four criteria to consider when testing reeds are balance, vibrancy, volume and strength. Check the High A Low A balance against a single sounding tenor drone - if these two notes are in the ballpark chances are the rest of the notes can be tuned.
