(Photo: Derek Maxwell)London – November 7, 2009 – At the annual solo piping competitions at London, organized by the Scottish Piping Society of London, Stuart Liddell of Inveraray, Scotland, won the biggest prize, the Bratach Gorm for piobaireachd, thus doubly securing his invitation to the 2010 Glenfiddich Championship, which he won the week before. Liddell also won the Gillies Cup Open Piobaireachd, completing an infrequent double. In the the B-Grade, Derek Midgley of New Jersey was the overall winner. It was the 70th anniversray year of the London competition.

Quality reed selection is a pre-requisite to obtaining a good tone in a pipe corps. Four criteria to consider when testing reeds are balance, vibrancy, volume and strength. Check the High A Low A balance against a single sounding tenor drone - if these two notes are in the ballpark chances are the rest of the notes can be tuned.
