McCallum on top at Duncan Memorial

Willie McCallum
Glasgow – January 17, 2010 – Willie McCallum emerged as the overall winner of the annual Gordon Duncan Memorial invitational solo piping competition, held at the National Piping Centre as part of the Celtic Connections music festival. The event pays tribute to the late piper by holding events in Scottish, Breton and Irish genres.

Quality reed selection is a pre-requisite to obtaining a good tone in a pipe corps. Four criteria to consider when testing reeds are balance, vibrancy, volume and strength. Check the High A Low A balance against a single sounding tenor drone - if these two notes are in the ballpark chances are the rest of the notes can be tuned.
