New free app allows real-time online voting at pipe band contests
Published: July 26, 2012
A new mobile application that lets pipe band enthusiasts to rate and vote on their favourite performances as they occur has been launched Social Pariah Solutions, a company founded by Grade 1 Toronto Police Pipe Band Leading-Drummer Ken Constable.
“MyVote” is a free web-based application that enables competitors and spectators “to get involved in representing an alternative view of competition outcomes – all in the name of fun.” MyVote aggregates real-time data and enables sharing of user opinion via Twitter. Users don’t need to register and can vote anonymously.
According to Constable, results are calculated live and displayed dynamically in real-time increments. The social media component lets voters discuss the event as it happens with the integration of Twitter’s live streaming features.
“MyVote is not an attempt to undermine the real and official results of any competition,” said Constable, who developed the app himself. “[It is] just one more way for pipe band enthusiasts to exchange ideas and perspectives about competitions and pipe band music.”
The application – available at www.myvote.io – is already set up for making predications and live voting for the Grade 1 competitions at the European Championships (July 28th), the North American Pipe Band Championships (August 4th) and the World Pipe Band Championships (August 11th). Constable said that users have the ability to alter their ratings as the contest goes along, and only the final submission before the results are announced counts.
The methodology used in MyVote is based on the Modified Borda Count, a consensus electoral voting model where voters rank candidates in order of their preference. The system is used in several major sports to determine most valuable player awards.
On the frequently asked questions section of the application’s website, the organization states that safeguards are in place to keep users from voting more than once: “We have methods of limiting people from voting multiple times. Disclosing our methods would only give potential multi-voters ideas on how to circumvent our process! Just bear in mind, this is for fun. At this time, MyVote is not intended to calculate official results.”
