We continue our interview with one of piping and drumming's good guys, the venerable and accomplished Harry McNulty of Edinburgh, former Pipe-Major of the Grade 1 Lothian & Borders Police, British Caledonian Airways and Power of Scotland / ScottishPower pipe bands. One of only two pipe-majors to lead two Grade 1 bands to RSPBA major championship wins, McNulty is one of the unsung leaders in pipe band history. Includes video footage from the interview.

Quality reed selection is a pre-requisite to obtaining a good tone in a pipe corps. Four criteria to consider when testing reeds are balance, vibrancy, volume and strength. Check the High A Low A balance against a single sounding tenor drone – if these two notes are in the ballpark chances are the rest of the notes can be tuned.
