Bonar, Coyne, Grey Qualify for Lorient Competition

Los Angeles, California – February 17, 2001 – Andrew Bonar, Vancouver, British Columbia; Seamus Coyne, New York; and Michael Grey, Dundas, Ontario, each qualified for the McCollum Piping Championship in Lorient, France, in August.

Held on the Queen Mary Hotel, each competitor had to perform a March, Strathspey & Reel and a 5-7 minute medley of Irish tunes. The final round at Lorient calls for players to compete in three categories: Scottish, Irish, and Breton music.

The Los Angeles event is one of three qualifiers around the world. The others are in Australia and Scotland this spring. The contest was judged by Richard Parks of Belfast, Northern Ireland, and Iain MacLellan of Bearsden, Scotland.

Of interest was that the Los Angeles Scots Pipe Band performed at the ceilidh on Saturday night and, despite the band having a difficult winter of personnel changes, was impressive.

The Queen Mary contest is organized by LA Scots’ Pipe Major Scott MacDonald.
