Metro Cup builds to attract international all-star pipers

The 2006 Metro Cup on February 18th at the Holiday Inn Newark Airport in Newark, New Jersey, will feature its largest line-up yet of international competitors, including many rising stars from the Scottish circuit.

The invitational contest put together by the Metro Branch of the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association reaches out to competitors by offering sponsorship provided with the help of branch-member bands and other financial contributors. According to organizer Eric Stein, sponsored players often conduct a workshop and/or a recital for the band that helped to bring them to the event.

As a result, five other activities will happen around the contest itself, including a recital at the Knights of Columbus hall in Brooklyn by John Patrick, Scotland; Alen Tully, Eire; and Bill Livingstone, Canada on February 17.

On Saturday, February 25, competitor Margaret Houlihan of Glasgow will coordinate the first-ever CLASP competition held outside of Scotland, followed by a “You Be The Judge” piping competition between Alastair Dunn, Glasgow; Houlihan; a duet from the City of Washington Pipe Band and others.

Open piping competitors at the Metro Cup will be:

  • Duncan Bell, Florida
  • Dan Cole, USA
  • Alastair Dunn;
  • Bruce Gandy, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia
  • Alasdair Gillies, Pittsburgh
  • Andrew Hayes, Ottawa
  • Margaret Houlihan
  • Donald MacPhee, Alexandria, Scotland
  • Brian Meagher, USA
  • John Patrick
  • Mike Rogers, Maryland
  • Peter Skae, Maryland
  • Alen Tully
  • Scot Walker, Emaus, Penn.

The Metro Cup also features an amateur event on the same day.
