2005 Set Tunes announced by Piobaireachd Society

The Piobaireachd Society has announced the piobaireachds set for the 2005 Clasp, Senior, Gold Medal, and Silver Medal events at Oban, Inverness, Maxville and New Zealand.

As with 2004 requirements, competitors are asked to submit four tunes from each list for their respective competitions. For several years, the requirement had been to enter six tunes for the Gold and Silver medal events.

Senior Competitions

  • “Nameless” (cherede darievea), Piobaireachd Society (PS) Book 8 and the Kilberry Book of Ceol Mor (K)
  • “Mrs MacLeod of Tallisker’s Salute,” PS Bk 11
  • “Beinn a’ Ghriain,” PS Bk. 4 *
  • “The Earl of Ross’s March,” PS Bk 10 (note 1)
  • “The Lament for the Earl of Antrim,” PS Bk 3, K
  • “The Lament for the Union,” PS Bk 6, K * (note 2)

    (Note 1 – “Earl of Ross’s March” – Bk 10 – an additional bar of two crunluath beats on low A to be played after bar 3 of each line of Crunluath doubling.)

    (Note 2 – “Lament for the Union” – an alternative form of the variations can be found in an article by R.D. Cannon, Piping Times, Volume 50, No. 8 (May, 1998). Copies of these variations can be obtained from the Hon. Secretary, address as below).

    * For the purpose of these competitions, the tunes marked * should be played with a crunluath a mach variation.

    Competitors will submit four tunes from the above list, one of which they will be required to play.

    Gold Medal Competitions

  • “MacDonald of Kinlochmoidart’s Lament, No. 2,” PS Bk 6 *
  • “Lament for Captain MacDougall,” PS Bk 6, K
  • “MacLeod of MacLeod’s Lament,” PS Bk 15, K
  • “The Young Laird of Dungallon’s Salute,” PS Bk 10 *
  • “Clan Ranald’s Salute,” PS Bk 7, K *
  • “The Gathering of the MacNabs,” PS Bk 5, K *

    * For the purpose of these competitions, the tunes marked * should be played with a crunluath a mach variation.

    Competitors will submit four tunes from the above list, one of which they will be required to play.

    Silver Medal Competitions

  • “The Boat Tune,” PS Bk 13
  • “Lady Doyle’s Salute,” K
  • “March for a Beginner,” K
  • “Lament for the Little Supper,” PS Bk 8 & K
  • “Cluny MacPherson’s Salute,” PS Bk 4
  • “The MacKays’ Short Tune,” PS Bk 8

    Competitors will submit four tunes from the above list, one of which they will be required to play.

    The Piobaireachd Society goes on to advise that:

    “Competitors are not restricted to the settings or styles in the books mentioned above, and any other setting or style may be played, provided that the judges may take into consideration the authenticity and merits of such setting or style.

    “Competitors are advised to give advance notice to the judges should they intend to play alternatives to those contained in the Kilberry Book or in staff notation in the Society’s Collection.

    “Altogether different tunes known by the same or similar names will not be accepted as alternatives.”
