Five bands qualify for World’s Grade 1 final

Glasgow – August 12, 2006 – Results of the MSR qualifying competition to select five bands to go through to the the 14-band final Grade 1 competitions:

1st Alberta Caledonia (Canada)
2nd Ballycoan (Ulster)
3rd Dysart & Dundonald (Scotland)
4th Australia Highlanders (Australia)
5th Clan Gregor (Scotland)
Judges: Peter Snadden, Allan Ronaldson (piping); Jim Baxter (ensemble); and H. Russell (drumming).

These bands join the nine that have pre-qualified through the RSPBA’s league-table system of results from its 2006 majors, as well as non-UK bands that gained a prize at last year’s World’s.

  • House of Edgar-Shotts & Dykehead (Scotland)
  • Robert Wiseman Dairies-Vale of Atholl (Scotland)
  • Scottish Lion-78th Fraser Highlanders (Canada)
  • ScottishPower (Scotland)
  • Simon Fraser University (Canada)
  • St. Laurence O’Toole (Eire)
  • Strathclyde Police (Scotland)

    Weather at the event is warm and sunny.

    The 12-band qualifier contest was rife with wide spreads between the placings of the two piping judges, with disparity of as many as 10 places. For example, the Australia Highlanders had a first and an eleventh, and the 78th Highlanders (Halifax) had a twelfth and a second.
