John Riding, 1936-2011

The Ontario piping and drumming scene was saddened by the loss of John Riding, who died on September 18th at the age of 75.

While not a piper or drummer, and a native of England, Riding played a significant role with the Pipers & Pipe Band Society of Ontario for almost a decade, working closely as an administrator with President Bob Allen from 1996 until 2005.

John Riding brought a business-minded approach to the organization and was directly responsible for establishing the society’s first headquarters in Milton, Ontario – considered a milestone for the organization.

“John was noted for his business-like approach to administrative matters and for his remarkably personable and friendly style of communication,” said PPBSO President Charlie MacDonald. “He quickly became the man that made things happen within the PPBSO and did so with a passion.”

The funeral was held in Milton on September 22nd. To John Riding’s surviving family and his many friends, we offer our condolences at this sad time.
