Kuldell takes over as City of Washington Leading-Drummer

The City of Washington Pipe Band of Washington, DC, has made another leadership change, with long-time snare player Alex Kuldell taking over the Leading-Drummer spot from Jon Quigg. The change was planned and amicable, and Quigg will remain with the band.

Kuldell becomes the fourth L-D for City of Washington in five years. Jason Hoffert succeeded Bill Saul after the 2006 season, and Quigg resumed the role in 2009, after leading the corps for many years.

Kuldell has more than two decades of experience as a pipe band drummer and was described by one observer, who requested anonymity as “a terrific player.”

A member of the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association, the band competed in Grade 1 at the 2010 World Pipe Band Championships, and was subsequently downgraded by the RSPBA. A source close to the band has confirmed that City of Washington does not plan to travel to compete at the 2011 World’s.

It is not yet known if the band will continue to compete in Grade 1 in North America, or if it will move to Grade 2.

The band has been led by Pipe-Major Dan Lyden since 2008. Lyden succeeded long-time Pipe-Major Mike Green.

  1. I had the privilege of playing alongside Alex K and Jon Q from 1999-2003 in the COW line. They are two outstanding individuals and two outstanding drummers. Good luck to Alex and all of COW. (I just may be seeing you boys in the tent this year!!). 🙂 Brian Nugent
