Manawatu wins New Zealand Championship

Invercargill, New Zealand – March 12, 2005 – The Manawatu Scottish Pipe Band won its fifth straight New Zealand Championship, held here at the bottom of the South Island in cool and damp conditions. The contest comrpises a medley, MSR, and New Zealand’s unique “Street March” competition.

Grade 1
1st Manawatu Scottish
2nd New Zealand Police
3rd Dalewool Auckland & Districts
4th Canterbury Caledonian
5th City of Wellington

The Dalewool Auckland & Districts Pipe Band won the drumming in all three events.

The Hamilton Caledonian Pipe Band took first in the Grade 2 event, and the University of Ballarat and Ipswich bands, both from Australia, took the Grade 3 and Grade 4 contests, respectively. John MacGlashan College of Dunedin, New Zealand, won the Juvenile grade.

In other news, the New Zealand Police have revealed that they will travel to Scotland and Ireland in July to compete in the All-Ireland and European championships. The Manawatu Scottish will return to compete at the World Pipe Band Championships in August in Glasgow after missing last year’s contest.
