McWhirter to defend World Solo Drumming title Saturday

While the world’s top solo pipers vie for the Glenfiddich Championship at the magnificent great hall of Blair Castle, the world’s top pipe band snare drummers will ply their talents at Glasgow Caledonian University at the RSPBA’s World Solo Drumming Championships. About 170 drummers are entered in the various competitions.

Last year‘s winner, Steven McWhirter (pictured right) of Simon Fraser University, will try for a repeat victory, while perennial favourite, Jim Kilpatrick of House of Edgar-Shotts & Dykehead, will make another attempt to beat his own record with a seventeenth Word Solo title.

The event comprises both adult and juvenile categories, with drummers having to clear numerous heats to reach the finals.
For the first time, listening to the Adult Final of the 2007 World Solo Championships will be by ticket only. Tickets are priced at £4.25 and available from the RSPBA. A maximum of 500 will be sold.
