Pipers and Drummers Can Help in Wake of September 11 Disasters

In the aftermath of the horrific events of September 11 in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania, Piper & Drummer Online extends its support of the Silver Shield Foundation, an accredited charity that provides scholarship money to the children of fallen firefighters and police officers.

Martin Duffy, a member of the Grade 3 Monaghan Pipe Band of the Bronx, New York, manages the Silver Shield Foundation through Changing Our World, Inc., located on Lexington Avenue in Manhattan.

Specifically, the foundation covers the children of New York City firefighters, police officers, or state troopers from New York, New Jersey or Connecticut. Each of these organizations support pipe bands that are members of the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association.

Each child is eligible for US$20,000 in scholarship assistance through the program. The foundation provides tutors when the children need extra help at any age, and offers financial assistance to widows who may wish to continue their education.

Some 300 firefighters and police officers may have died on September 11, leaving behind more than 600 children. The foundation needs to raise US$12 million to cover them.

Cheques and money orders can be made out to “Silver Shield Foundation” and mailed to:
