Second annual Pipes+Drums event at Piping Live! Wed, Aug. 8th

Following the success of the first Pipes+Drums recital at the 2011 Piping Live! festival, pipes|drums Magazine will once again bring enthusiasts the free event at the Street Café at the National Piping Centre, this year with an expanded playbill of Grade 1 Pipe-Majors and Leading-Drummers, each performing for 20 minutes.

Five duets of Grade 1 Pipe-Majors and Leading-Drummers will take the Street Café stage, beginning at 12:45 pm on Wednesday, August 8th:

  • 78th Fraser Highlanders: P-M Doug MacRae and L-D Drew Duthart

  • Boghall & Bathgate Caledonia: P-M Ross Walker and L-D Gordon Brown

  • LA Scots: P-M Colin Armstrong and L-D Glenn Kvidahl

  • Lothian & Borders Police: P-M Neil and L-D Jake Jørgensen

  • Oran Mor: P-M Andrew Douglas and L-D Eric MacNeil

“pipes|drums is for pipers and drummers, and Pipes+Drums showcases pure pipe band artistry from some of the best exponents of the art,” said Andrew Berthoff, pipes|drums editor. “Hearing this kind of detail between so many top-flight pipe-majors and leading-drummers is generally only possible at the World Solo Drumming Championships in October. Since so few non-UK enthusiasts can attend the World Solos, we want to bring this kind of extraordinary talent to you, but without the restrictions of competition.”

All of these players have risen to the top of heap as soloists, and together they will demonstrate first-hand the synergy that a Grade 1 pipe-major and leading-drummer must have to enable their band as a whole to succeed.

Last year’s free Pipes+Drums event resulted in a packed Street Café, with audience spilling out onto the National Piping Centre’s courtyard. Virtuoso performances from Inveraray & District (P-M Stuart Liddell and L-D Steven McWhirter), Manawatu Scottish (P-M Stweart MacKenzie and L-D Graeme Parker)  Peel Regional Police (P-M John Cairns and L-D Graham Brown) and ScottishPower (Chris Armstrong and L-D Barry Wilson) were a clinic for those fortunate to listen live and via the pipes|drums Magazine YouTube video channel.
