What many would describe as the best organized and run outdoor event on the Scottish games circuit was, as usual, very well attended and held in the shadow of the famous castle in overcast with and occasional rain in the morning, but clear and humid in the afternoon. Argyllshireman Angus MacColl had the most success, winning the Piobaireachd and the Strathspey & Reel in the Premier/A-Grade category. Benoni MacTalla had a near clean-sweep of the Grade 2 band competition at the St. Benedict’s College Highland Gathering , depriving the Transvaal Scottish of a grand slam of all four South African Regional Championships. The 78th Fraser Highlanders won the MSR Grade 1 competition at the annual Kincardine Scottish Festival under very warm, sunny conditions at the always well-attended event. The win for the 78th Frasers continued the fickle Ontario season that has seen a different band rise to the top at each of the contests. The Ottawa Police Services Pipe Band took Grade 2 again and challenged up to Grade 1, while the local band, Penetangore, won the seven-contestant Grade 3 event. Ian K.
