In the second part of the “Students’ guide to piping and university,” you’ll find insight into specific schools as well as international perspectives on attending school provided by three very successful pipers and students: Faye Henderson, Derek Midgley and Craig Muirhead, each of whom managed to balance their academic and piping lives, and even improve their success rate in solo competitions in Scotland.
The College of Piping’s Grade 3 and Grade 5 bands enjoyed first prizes at the annual Summerside Highland Gathering in Canada’s smallest province. Despite forecasts for torrential rain, Saturday saw only light showers and Sunday was mainly dry. Field Marshal Montgomery made it two for two in major 2012 championships, taking the British in mainly dry and fairly warm conditions at Annan. Glasgow Skye continued its resurgence, winning the Grade 2 event. Once again, pipes|drums published the Grade 1 results as they were announced from the park.
The first sanctioned PPBSO Champion Supreme event of 2012 took place here as part of the large Kiwanis Music Festival. The event was organized by the PPBSO’s Western Branch and featured a full slate of amateur solo events in the morning and a small mini-band contest in the afternoon. The contest was open to non-members of the PPBSO or affiliates to compete, but only members are eligible for Champion Supreme points.
