RSPBA Announces Summer Workshop

The Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association (RSPBA) has announced that its annual Summer Pipe Band Workshop will be held this year from July 15 to 20 at the organization’s headquarters at 45 Washington Street in Glasgow, Scotland.

The workshop offers hands-on coaching in piping and snare, tenor and bass drumming. Attendees are catered for by a team of ten instructors, with a low instructor-to-class ratio.

Piping instructors are John Nevans (City of Glasgow), Rab Burns (Newtongrange and Stewart’s Melville College), Bob McFie (soloist and composer), Iain Simpson (Boghall & Bathgate and George Watson’s College), Jim Semple (Strathclyde Police), and Alvis Kerr (Boghall & Bathgate). Drumming instructors are John McKenzie (Lothian & Borders Police), Alistair Hepburn (Glasgow Skye Association), Brian Purves (Chivas Regal), and Neil Whitelaw (David Urquhart Travel).

Guest pipers and drummers will occasionally take coaching sessions and seminars, and in the past have included such luminaries as Brian Lamond, Robert Mathieson, Ian Roddick, Kenny MacDonald, Jim Kilpatrick, Gordon Brown, and Arthur Cook.

Two evening visits to practices of Grade 1 bands will be included. Price is set at £130 for adults and £95 for those under 18.
