Keith Dawes new Lothian & Borders Police Pipe-Major

Keith Dawes is the new Pipe-Major of the Lothian & Borders Police Pipe Band.

Dawes replaces Colin MacLellan, who resigned from the band shortly after the 2004 season concluded.

Originally from Ayrshire, Dawes has been a constable with the Lothian & Borders Police force since 1996, and has played with the band since that time. He previously played in the Ayr Society Pipe Band under Davey Clark, and his piping teachers include Ronald Morrison and Angus J. MacLellan. He served with the 2nd Battalion Scots Guards under Pipe-Major Gordon Webster and was an assistant instructor at the Guards Depot Piping School, completing his Pipe-Major’s course in 1989.

Dawes is the latest leader of one of the world’s most legendary bands. Before MacLellan’s five-year tenure, the band had a series of pipe-majors, including George Lumsden, Duncan Smith, and Kenny McBride.

There were reportedly several applicants for the Lothian & Borders Police leadership opening, including ones from pipe-majors with existing Grade 1 and Grade 2 bands.
