78th Frasers Squeak Out Maxville Victory

Maxville, Ontario – August 4, 2001 – The 78th Fraser Highlanders just barely managed a victory at the North American Championships here today with a win on ensemble preference over the Toronto Police, which finished second. City of Washington finished third in Grade 1, with Celtic Flair in fourth, with four bands in the grade.

Toronto Police reportedly had five first placings from a total of eight judges over the Medley and MSR events. The band won the Medley.

Grade 2 was won by the Fredericton Society of St. Andrew Pipe Band of Fredericton, New Brunswick. Both the Windsor Police and Niagara Police were favoured to take the grade. The grade featured 13 bands, with one judge saying that several could easily have won the event.

In the solo piping, Bruce Gandy of Summerside, PEI, won Piper of the Day honours, breaking a tie with Michael Grey of Dundas, Ontario, by winning the piobaireachd event. Over 30 competitors played in the Professional Solo Piping.

Conditions were cooler than the Friday, but bands still had to contend with intense sunshine on a dusty park.
