Cairns overall winner of Cambridge solos

Cambridge, Ontario – July 16, 2005 – Much-needed heavy rain set in at an inopportune time for some solo competitors at the Cambridge Highland Games, where John Cairns of London, Ontario, was the overall winner in the professional solo piping.

The rain continued into the afternoon and the Grade 1 band competition was eventually cancelled. Only Grade 1 and Grade 2 band events were offered this year, marking Cambridge’s return to band competition after a long hiatus. Two Grade 2 bands had previously pulled out of the event leaving only one planning to compete.

Cambridge was one of the biggest contests on the Ontario circuit until the mid-1990s, when a string of bad luck, including terrible weather, saw the games suffer and decide to fold.
