European Pipe Band Champions: Field Marshal Montgomery

Ayr, Scotland – June 23, 2001 – The Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band of Belfast, Northern Ireland, got sweet vindication by winning the 2001 European Pipe Band Championships here today after finishing second at the British Championships in May when a tie for first was broken by ensemble judge Robert Shepherd. Field Marshal also won the 2000 European Championship, and was last to play of the 13 Grade 1 bands in this year’s contest.

Second place went to Boghall & Bathgate Caledonia of Bathgate, Scotland, and third to British Champions Shotts & Dykehead Caledonia. Field Marshal also won the drumming in Grade 1.

Grade 2 was won by Ravara, also of Northern Ireland, a band that has had a tremendous year so far and could be expected to dominate for the rest of the season. Dumfries & Galloway Constabulary came up with a strong second, for the band’s highest championship prize in its history.
