McGillivray to judge Argyllshire Gathering, Cowal

Jim McGillivray of Aurora, Ontario, has been invited and has accepted to judge at this year’s Argyllshire Gathering at Oban, Scotland. It will be the first time in the long history of the piping competition that a Canadian will judge at one of the two premier Scottish solo piping “gatherings.”

McGillivray has also been invited to be a solo-piping judge at the Cowal Gathering.

It is not yet known which events McGillivray will judge. He is the only North American to have an A rating for both piobaireachd and light music by the Joint Committee for Piping, a group that comprises the Competing Pipers Association, the Piobaireachd Society, and representatives from the Argyllshire Gathering and the Northern Meeting. The Joint Committee’s list of judges is limited to those not actively competing.

Among the many awards he gained during his solo competition career, McGillivray won both Highland Society of London Gold Medals, the Clasp, and the MSR at the Glenfiddich Championships.

McGillivray was a judge at the 2004 Uist & Barra solo piping competitions in Glasgow.

Bob Worrall of Burlington, Ontario, in 2000 became the first Canadian judge at a significant UK solo-piping contest, when he served on the panel for the prestigious Bratach Gorm piobaireachd competition at the Scottish Pipers Society of London’s event in London, England.
