Prince Charles Pipe Band bypassing World’s

The MacTarnahan’s Prince Charles Pipe Band of San Francisco is the latest North American Grade 1 band to decide not to attend the 2004 World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow in August.

According to Colin Berta, the band’s pipe-major: “The executive committee of the Prince Charles Band feels that the best interests of the organization lie in taking this season and growing the pipe corps while improving the overall quality of the band on a domestic front.”

Berta went on to say that the decision was made from a “compounded equation of cost-effectiveness versus the leadership’s assessment of how we feel we would fare, considering elements of the band such as size and playing level.”

The Prince Charles band is planning to explore travelling to other contests. Berta hinted that there are plans to record a CD later in the season.

Prince Charles joins fellow California Grade 1 band the Los Angeles Scots in deciding not to attend the 2004 World’s.
