‘Super Saturday’ for world’s best pipers and drummers
The biggest two events of the solo seasons for pipers and drummers occur on October 30 with the Glenfiddich Invitational Solo Championships and the World Solo Drumming Championships take place in Scotland at, respectively, Blair Atholl and Bathgate.
The Glenfiddich, considered the ultimate contest for solo pipers, pits the top 10 prize-winners of the year, starting with the aggregate winner of last year’s Glenfiddich. Invitations are gained by winning marquee events, as determined by the contest’s organizing committee. 2004 competitors and their qualifying successes are:
Judges for the piobaireachd event will be Angus Maclellan, Iain Morrison, and Andrew Wright, and, for the light music, Walter Cowan, Malcolm McRae, and Jimmy Young.
Also on Saturday are the World Solo Drumming Championship, again held at Bathgate Academy in Bathgate, Scotland. The contest has a record entry, with four sections of snare drummers hoping to make the final event.
Previous prize-winners from World Solo Championships pre-qualify for the final. Jim Kilpatrick of the House of Edgar-Shotts & Dykehead Pipe Band will be vying for a record fifteenth World title.
