Updated: Northern Meeting may further limit accepted entries

The Northern Meeting, recognized by solo pipers as the premier event of the year, has warned that because of having to relocate in 2005 due to renovations at the Eden Court Theatre at Inverness the competition may be forced to limit accepted entries.

Unconfirmed reports have stated that the 2005 Northern Meeting will be held in Aviemore and that numbers for both the Silver and Gold Medal contests will in fact be reduced. Aviemore is about 50 kilometres south of Inverness.

A joint statement from the Northern Meeting and Argyllshire Gathering, the Northern Meeting’s sister-contest at Oban, said, “If a discrepancy arises between Oban and Inverness with regard to numbers for each competition please accept that it is due to logistics and is likely to be temporary.”

Both events put strict limitations on entries, and are thought to accept only about two-thirds of the applications from around the world. Entry for the Gold and Silver medal contests have been limited to 30 and 35, respectively.

It is not known whether the Northern Meeting, coloquially known as “Inverness,” will be called “Aviemore.”
