Beaumont takes Gold, Speirs Senior, Bruce Silver at Argyllshire Gathering

Oban, Scotland – August 24, 2011 – The major piobaireachd and light music events of the 2011 Argyllshire Gathering were held at indoor venues around the town, and the first major result was Iain Speirs of Edinburgh winning the Senior Piobaireachd. Calum Beaumont of Bo’ness, Scotland, later was announced the winner of the Gold Medal. Gordon Bruce of Glasgow won the Silver Medal. Three of the Gold Medal prize-winners were among the final five to play in the contest, including Beaumont, who played second-last.

Gordon Bruce qualified to compete at the Argyllshire Gathering only on Sunday after his initial entry was not accepted. Because of the arcane late qualifier system, he is not eligible to compete at the Northern Meeting Silver Medal. Silver Medal prize-winners Mike Fitzhenry and Douglas Gardiner also were not originally accepted for the Silver Medals, and also qualified in the special contest three days earlier.

Sarah Muir of Inveraray, Scotland, was the winner of the MacGregor Memorial competition for younger players. Muir most recently was the winner of the Pipe Idol contest at the Piping Live! festival.

Stay tuned to pipes|drums for results from Oban as they are announced.
