A very young Norrie Gillies playing with his father, Alasdair, in 2007.

Alasdair Gillies, who died in 2011 at the age of 47, was one of the greatest solo competitors in the history of Highland piping, winning, among many other major prizes, an incredible 11 Former Winners MSR Silver Stars at the Northern Meeting, a record that is unlikely ever to be matched. The late Norman Gillies Sr. was also a prodigious competitor, with great success in light music at the major gatherings. He also founded and was pipe-major of the Ullapool & District Pipe Band.

Norrie Gillies, who also lives in Ullapool, Scotland, said that the book will be priced “around the £15 mark, with several retailers already ordering copies for re-sell.” He added that The Gillies Collection will also be available directly from him at www.gilliespiping.com

“Anyone who knew my father and grandfather know that they’re renowned for their compositions and arrangements, respectively, and I’m extremely pleased that I’ve managed to follow in the family footsteps with the inclusion of some of my own compositions,” Gillies concluded.
