When celebrating in times of peace one of the Highlanders' favorite pastimes was the tainchel. For these "great hunts" very often several clans would combine. Chieftains would send word to the clansmen that such an event was planned and when and where they should assemble. After a successful hunt a great feast and celebration would be held. Then the rival clansmen would test each other's prowess at various sports - running, jumping, wrestling, or primitive forms of weight putting with stones, or divided into roughly equal sides vying against each other in a very early form of camanachd or shinty. Lastly the clansmen would vie with each other in piping and in dancing, the pipers taking it in turns to demonstrate their skills and the clansmen to demonstrate their agility and neatness of movement by dancing complicated steps to the pipe music. These relaxations were in effect the forerunners of the modern Highland games.

The Rio Grande Valley Celtic Festival and Highland Games brings to New Mexico a celebration of the lifeways, traditions, cultural heritage and contributions of the Celtic nations to our American life. The Irish, Welsh, Scots, Galicians, Britons and Bretons, all have and continue to significantly contribute to our lives today. The Festival assembles an ever shifting kaleidoscope of Celtic song, dance, traditional clothing (aye, the kilt), foods, language revival, stories, poetry, humor, history, traditional and Celtic inspired music from the famous Highland war pipes to incomparable delicacy of the harp highland games, and other Celtic sports such as rugby, hurling and Gaelic football, to New Mexico. The renewal and celebration of these traditions on the field each year is the mission of the Festival Association. Competitions and demonstrations in Highland Country Dance, Highland Dance and Irish Step Dance complement the rousing sounds of pipes and drums. Clans and Celtic Societies gather to share stories and act as your gateway to family histories, common questions and Celtic heritage. The presentation of history (and whimsy) is at the heart of attending reenactment groups. The heaving of heavy objects - stones and logs and faux hay bales - is the visual and participant delight of the Highland Heavy Games. Celtic dog breeds and working dog demonstrations harken to mind a pastoral way of life so prevalent in Celtic homelands as well as here in New Mexico. Please explore other areas of this site for more details on the events, entertainments and sights you will enjoy at this our 25th annual event, May 18th and 19th at Balloon Fiesta Park in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Piping, Drumming , Pipe Band Competition and the Great Highland Bagpipes Historically, the components of competition among the members of a Pipe Band have fallen into four categories. These competitions are the solo competitions for pipers and drummers; the pipe band competition; and the competition for the drum majors. Over the years and for a variety of reasons modifications and local changes have been made to these basic segments but the fundamental categories have remained with little alteration since the early 1900s. They are Solo Piping; Solo Drumming; Drum Major; and Pipe Bands.
