British Championships Confirmed

After an unusually long delay, the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association has confirmed that the British Pipe Band Championships have been scheduled for May 19, 2001, in Banbridge, County Down, Northern Ireland.

The first major championship of the year, it had taken a several additional months to confirm the event after much negotiation between the RSPBA and the village of Banbridge.

Some RSPBA members had complained that it had taken far too long, leaving little time to plan and budget for the trip – a major expenditure for bands based in Scotland and England. The RSPBA has reportedly negotiated a reduced rate with Stena Ferries for member bands.

The British will be supported by the Banbridge District Council.

Said an RSPBA spokesperson, “We would encourage all bands to attend and wish for overseas members to make the journey. They will be made most welcome with some Irish hospitality.”

Still awaiting confirmation is the Scottish Pipe Band Championship, normally held in early September. Unconfirmed reports state that the event may be held in Pitlochry, Scotland.
