Cowal Championship Last RSPBA Major

The last of 2002’s five major contests, the Cowal Pipe Band Championship, will be held at the Cowal Gathering in Dunoon, Scotland, on Saturday, August 31. 2002 World Champions Field Marshal Montgomery will aim not only to win the contest but secure the title “Champion of Champions” for most aggregate points across the majors.

Shotts & Dykehead is currently second in the Champion of Champions table, three points behind Field Marshal. A third prize or better by Field Marshal at Cowal will secure the overall title.

Rumours have been circulating that Richard Parkes, Pipe-Major of Field Marshal, will leave the band after the 2002 season, but Parkes has stated categorically to Piper & Drummer Online that these are reports are false.

Until 1947, Cowal was considered the World Championship. The then Scottish Pipe Band Association determined that a true World Championship should change venue each year and pulled the event from the Dunoon gathering.

Over the last 22 contests, the World Pipe Band Championship has been held in Glasgow every year but 1985.
