Field Marshal Captures British

Ayr, Scotland – July 27, 2002 – The Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band of Belfast has won the 2002 British Pipe Band Championships, continuing to gain momentum just weeks before the World Championships on August 10.

Shotts & Dykehead finished second and won the drumming, but the bigger news of the day was that St. Laurence O’Toole of Dublin and Dysart & Dundonald of Fife, Scotland, were fifth and sixth, respectively, placing ahead of Boghall & Bathgate, as did the Lothian & Borders Police, which apparently finished just shy of the prize list in seventh.

According to the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association’s league table qualifying system for the final of the World Championships, the six RSPBA bands to go through will be: Field Marshal Montgomery, Shotts & Dykehead, ScottishPower, Strathclyde Police, Boghall & Bathgate, and Dysart & Dundonald. St. Laurence O’Toole qualifies as an “overseas” band, and those seven will be joined, by merit of placing in last year’s World’s, overseas bands Simon Fraser University and the 78th Fraser Highlanders.

Bands will compete in the qualifying MSR competition at the World’s for the remaining six spots in the 14-band final.
