I was taught by John in 2005 and I loved his pleasant manner and fine approach to the music. He was very encouraging to me and I will always have warm memories of John.
John was my piping tutor for four years whilst I studied in Aberdeen towards my teaching degree. He was not only a great piper but a kind and genuine person who did a lot to promote piping education. His enthusiasm for the instrument and for music was immense and I learnt a great deal from him during my sessions. During my time with him he introduced me to Piobreachd, helped me to develop my ability to fine tune the Highland Bagpipe and shared some great piping stories from his past. After a few months of starting with him I was surprised to find that my own Grandfather had taught John the beat as a police recruit in the Aberdeen Police Force. From that moment on I knew I would be looked after. I look back with fond memories and shall never forget the gifts of home made scones and soup which I was given on a weekly basis as he helped out a poor student!” He was a true gentleman and without a doubt will be missed in the piping community. with respect Stuart Brown – PM Perth and District Pipe Band”
