Laughlin to leave SFU to be Canterbury L-D

The Grade 1 Canterbury Caledonian Pipe Band of New Zealand has secured the services of James Laughlin, a snare-drummer with the Simon University Pipe Band of Vancouver since 2004, as its new Leading-Drummer and Drumming Tutor at St. Andrew’s College in Christchurch.

In addition to playing with SFU, Laughlin has twice won the World Juvenile Solo Juvenile Championship, and has been a semi-finalist in the adult section of the World Solos. He is originally from Northern Ireland.

Laughlin will move to Christchurch following the 2009 World Pipe Band Championships. The St Andrew’s College Pipe Band won Grade 2 at the New Zealand Pipe Band Championships.

Canterbury Caledonian plans to compete at the 2010 World Championships. The band is directed by Richard Hawke, who was appointed to the post in October 2008.

  1. Well done James! That’s a great gig. All the best to you in your endeavours. Can’t wait to hear what you and Richard create. Your Pal, HOSS

  2. A great university chairman once told me, high quality people and organizations are best known for the individuals they train, mentor and put out into the world. They are not best known for the people their departments hoard, isolate and collect. The SFU influence in the pipe band world is spreading and is a great reflection on their leadership, class and success over many years. Cheers, Kent Argubright
