MacLellan shares piobaireachd knowledge with recordings on site

Colin MacLellan of Edinburgh is sharing his knowledge of piobaireachd by making recordings of his playing and lessons on the 2008 Silver Medal tunes set by the Piobaireachd Society for the major contests.

So far he has posted five tunes from the list, and plans to provide the remaining three shortly. The recording are free to all with an Internet connection, and he invites visitors to share them as they wish, “offered purely for educational benefit to those pipers who wish to make use of them.”

His renditions of the tunes are from the Piobaireachd Society’s settings. MacLellan received his piobaireachd tuition from his father, Capt. John A. MacLellan, one of the most famous pipers of all time.

After an equally famous competitive career that included winning both Highland Society of London Gold Medals and several Silver Chanters, Colin MacLellan formally retired from competition in November 2007. He is a full-time reedmaker, and conducts numerous piping workshops around the world in between adjudication invitations.MacLellan’s website postings are an excellent complement to the 2008 Set Tunes Series by Dr. William Donaldson currently running on pipes|drums.
