New Ottawa-area contest scheduled for June 19

In a year when several outdoor piping, drumming and pipe band competitions around the world are being cancelled, a new event has been created near Ottawa.

The Veterans Memorial Highland Games is scheduled to take place on June 19 at the Fairgrounds in Spencerville, Ontario, 40-minutes south of Ottawa. The event will feature competitions for grade 3, 4, and 5 bands, as well as solo piping and drumming events.

According to organizer Kelly Bush, “Due to the late start in organizing these games, we are not Pipers & Pipe Band Society of Ontario sanctioned, but hope to be for 2005. Band prize and band travel money will be similar to the PPBSO sanctioned games.”

In synch with the 60th anniversary of D-Day, the 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group Pipe Band will perform throughout the day.

Further information and entry forms are available at the PPBSO Ottawa Branch Web site.

PPBSO stresses June 14 Maxville entry deadline

In further Ontario news, the PPBSO has stressed that the official deadline for entries to the North American Championships at Maxville, Ontario, is June 14.

Bob Allen, PPBSO president, says, “We want to make sure that all band and solo entries are in with plenty of time to spare, so that there are no disappointments. We know how important Maxville is to competitors all over the world.”
