Parkes returns to play with Field Marshal Montgomery

Richard Parkes returned to competing with his band, Field Marshal Montgomery, at the European Championships at Lisburn, Northern Ireland, on Saturday, the first competition he has played at since suffering a stroke in March of this year.

Field Marshal went on the win the event, taking straight first-placings from all four judges.

Alastair Dunn had been acting as interim pipe-major of the band, successfully guiding Field Marshal to wins at the Scottish and All-Ireland Championships, and a second prize at the British in June.

Parkes had brought himself back to playing with the band gradually, and had a prominent role in tuning the band, even though he didn’t ultimately play on the park before the European Championship.
