Piobaireachd Society Announces Set Tunes for 2001

The Piobaireachd Society has announced its recommended lists of tunes for Gold Medal, Silver Medal, and Senior competitions at the 2001 Argyllshire Gathering, Northern Meeting and Piobaireachd Society (Canada) competitions.

After enduring some controversy over the course of 1999-2000 for requiring competitors in the various events to submit six tunes, rather than the relatively normal four, the organization has decided to keep the same structure in place for 2001. The number of tunes from which to choose has been increased to 10, however, up two from the 2000 lists.

The senior events, which comprise the Clasp at Inverness and Senior Piobaireachd at Oban, will be required to submit only four tunes from a list of eight. The Piobaireachd Society brought the 2000 requirement for the senior events down to four from six after pressure was placed on the organization by competitors.

Three of the tunes in the Gold Medal list — “MacKay’s Banner,” “The Menzies’ Salute,” and “The Park Piobaireachd # 2” — were in Gold Medal lists from 1997 and ’98, which is a relatively short period of time for them to resurface. There is some speculation that these were included in the 2001 list to make it less stringent on more experienced competitors.
