Pipers Gear Up for Argyllshire Gathering

The world’s best pipers are preparing to compete once again at the Argyllshire Gathering at Oban, Scotland, on August 22 and 23, for some of the most coveted prizes in solo piping.

The first of the two Highland Society of London Gold Medals will be on Wednesday, with only 30 of the world’s solo pipers having their entries accepted. The other Gold Medal contest will be on September 5 at the Northern Meeting at Inverness. The contest will be judged by James Young, Donald MacPherson, and Malcolm MacRae.

The Senior, or “Open,” Piobaireachd competition is reserved for previous winners of the Gold Medal, an even more prestigious group of pipers. The Silver Medal competition will also showcase pipers vying to make the jump to Gold Medal competing status.

The Former Winners March, Strathspey & Reel will be on Wednesday night, while the rest of the light music events will be held outdoors at the games on Thursday.
